Before you Buy a Shed

Getting the right shed for the job is more than just working out the best size, shape and aesthetic that you want.  Each shed location is unique in terms of the site, exposure to the elements and distance from other buildings. These factors must all be considered so that your local seller can provide you with the correct shed for the job.  Before seeking a quote for your shed, it’s important that you consider the following questions and bring the answers with you to your local shed seller.

  • What will the shed be used for - domestic, farm or industrial use?

  • How far from the coastline will the shed be built?

  • Will it be subject to extreme conditions, e.g. snow, cyclones?

  • What is the surrounding area generally like – suburban, semi open or open plain and
        exposed?

  • Will the shed be built on or near a hill, slope or escarpment?

  • Are there existing structures near where you want to build your shed?
  • How far away are these from the site?

Compare apples with apples

Check the steel thickness that you are being quoted. The thicker the metal, the stronger and more expensive the shed.

  • Roofing and Cladding - Insist that your quotes detail the BMT (Base Metal Thickness) data
recommended for comparison by New Zealand Steel. If any of your quotes state only the
Total Coated Thickness (TCT) data, insist they supply BMT instead, as TCT figures have a
level of variation that can be exploited by unscrupulous suppliers that quote the highest
        potential thickness.
  • Columns, Girts, Purlins, Rafters – Ensure you are provided specifications on the materials
used. On our attached Offer, we list the product codes which provide you with information on
the size and thickness of all steel members used. For example, Column C15024 means the
member is a C Section 150mm wide and 2.4mm thick. Purlin RB10010 is a roof batten
100mm high and 1.0mm thick. Compare this information to be sure you are comparing offers
fairly. Specifying narrower or thinner members impacts the strength of your shed and may
result in non-compliance with the Building Code or very limited Warranties.
  • Warranty – Take care to understand the warrantees of the building frame as well as the
cladding. A building with a 15 year structural warranty might be okay today, but what happens
      in 15 years?

When do you need it?

Researching, financing, ordering, delivering and building are only some of the steps in buying a shed or garage. You also need to consider council approval time and potentially excavation and site preparation. Talk to your Fair Dinkum Sheds distributor for advice on council approval needs in your specific area. They have the local contacts and information to help. And with our advanced design and engineering software they can in most cases instantly create plans and quotes to help expedite the process – no more waiting a week (or more!) for quotes and drawings as we can provide these on-site for the majority of sheds and garages.

Ensure you get a site-specific design.

Only some companies provide a garage or shed that is designed for the specific needs of your site. This can include topography, local wind speed, importance level and snow loading of your building to name just a few specific requirements of the Building Code. Only Fair Dinkum Homes & Sheds provide a free structural calculations document to give you evidence that the shed is engineered for your specific site.

Choose a well-known brand.

Ask questions

Will they help you with instructions over the phone if needed during DIY construction? Can they offer shed building services? What is their deposit/payment schedule? Will they take care of council requirements? Can they prepare the site? By matching their services to your needs you get added value that will make the process smoother and less stressful. Also do your research, this industry has seen many providers come and go. Don’t fall victim to another short term player – research the supplier and ask for information on length of time in business as well as to see examples of local work and customer testimonials
